The Correlation Between Sleep and Multiple Sclerosis

According to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, over 400,000 people in the United States and about 2.5 million people around the world suffer with this disease. For them, activities of daily living most take for granted can become highly difficult to achieve. One that’s often overlooked is getting a good night’s sleep. Whether you or a loved one has become impacted by this debilitating side effect, there is relief. By following some tips, you can be on your way addressing sleep issues.

1. Regular Bedtime Routine

One of the most important ways to ensure proper sleep is to stick to a regular bedtime routine. Even on the weekends, make sure you wake up and go to bed at the same time. Training your mind and body to a certain schedule will help it better respond to your needs.

2. Cut Out Stimulants Before Bed

Many of us enjoy our caffeinated beverages such as coffee and soda. However, especially for those suffering with MS, they can cause serious disruptions to our sleep. However, you don’t have to cut out their use completely. Just cease consumption about four hours before you regularly go to bed.

3. Avoid Eating Before Bedtime

Indigestion can make it very difficult to achieve a restful sleep. The best way to avoid this occurring is to avoid eating larger meals within the last few hours of your day. A light snack shouldn’t cause any significant problems.

4. Relaxation Ritual

About an hour before bed, it’s often helpful to establish a relaxation ritual. Not only does this tie in with your regular bedtime, but it also help prepare the mind for rest. Some of the activities you could consider include:

  • Light Yoga
  • Reading
  • Taking a warm bath with scented candles
  • Listening to soothing music

5. Limit Distractions

We are able to best achieve restful sleep when our environment is free of distractions. To achieve this, the first step is to turn off the television, radio, or other common media outlets. Your sleep is highly influenced by what’s going on in the background. You should also make it a point to turn off all lights. This could even include flipping your alarm clock on it face to eliminate the glow it projects throughout your room.

Of all the ways in which multiple sclerosis impacts patients, the stress involved with maintaining proper sleep can present a significant frustration.
